How do I fix an Ooma device with a blinking red light?
Answer
Plug the Ooma into a different wall outlet, then power-cycle the modem, router, and Ooma in that order. Give the Ooma several minutes after it is plugged in last so it can reconnect.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Restarting the modem and router will briefly interrupt internet and phone service for the whole home.
Follow these steps
Move Ooma power to another outlet
Unplug the Ooma power adapter from both the wall and the Ooma unit, then plug the adapter directly into a different wall outlet, not a power strip.
You should see: The Ooma receives power from a direct wall outlet.
Power everything down
Unplug the Ooma, the modem, and the router.
You should see: All three devices are off with no lights remaining.
Wait a full minute
Leave the modem, router, and Ooma unplugged for 60 seconds.
You should see: The network gear is fully powered down before restart.
Bring the modem and router back first
Plug in the modem first and wait until its online or internet light is stable. Then plug in the router and wait until it is fully up.
You should see: Internet service is available before the Ooma reconnects.
Plug in the Ooma last
Plug in the Ooma last and wait 3 to 5 minutes while it boots and registers.
You should see: The blinking red light changes to the normal ready status and phone service works again.

Extra tips
What to look for: A blinking red status light on the Ooma unit, plus whether the modem and router internet lights are stable before the Ooma finishes starting.
Before you change anything: Note your current cable order between modem, router, and Ooma. Use a wall outlet rather than a power strip when retesting power. Plan for a short phone-service outage during the restart. Never give remote access or account passwords to unexpected callers claiming they can clear the red light.
