Why is there loud static on a home phone when a mobile phone is nearby?

Answer

Loud static that appears when a cellphone is used near a cordless or VoIP home phone is often radio interference or a struggling adapter. Move the cellphone away, separate the VoIP adapter from other electronics, and power-cycle the Ooma/modem/router chain.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Unplug equipment by power adapters; do not open the VoIP device case.

Follow these steps

  1. Separate the cellphone from the home phone gear

During a test call, move mobile phones at least several feet away from the cordless base, handset, and VoIP adapter.

You should see: Static drops when the cellphone is farther away, confirming interference.

  2. Power-cycle Ooma, modem, and router

Unplug power from the Ooma adapter, modem, and router for 30 seconds. Plug the modem first, then router, then Ooma, and wait until the Ooma indicator returns to a steady ready state such as solid blue.

You should see: The adapter returns to a normal ready light and a test call is clearer.

  3. Test with a corded phone

If possible, plug a basic corded phone into the adapter’s phone port and place a test call with cellphones kept away.

You should see: You can tell whether the cordless handsets or the line/adapter are the main noise source.

  4. Reduce electrical clutter around the adapter

Move the Ooma or VoIP adapter away from power strips overloaded with bricks, speakers, and Wi-Fi mesh nodes, and keep Ethernet cables neat without sharp bends.

You should see: Audio stays stable during calls even when someone uses a cellphone in another room.

Extra tips

What to look for: Static that spikes specifically when a cellphone is active nearby, adapter status lights, and whether a corded test phone is also noisy.

Before you change anything: Note whether you use Ooma or another VoIP adapter. Have a corded phone available for a clean test if possible. Unplug equipment only by the power adapters, not by yanking data cables hard. Avoid opening the adapter.
