How do I fix a phone that says network not available when making a call?

Answer

This usually means the phone has no usable cellular connection for calls—not a Wi‑Fi problem. Toggle Airplane Mode, confirm the SIM is detected and mobile data/voice is on, then restart the phone. If the message remains with no signal bars, contact the carrier to check line activation and outages.

Follow these steps

  1. Toggle Airplane Mode and retry the call

Turn Airplane Mode on for 15–20 seconds, then turn it off and wait until the carrier name or signal bars return. Try the call again.

You should see: The phone re-registers on the network, or the same error returns with clearer signal status.

  2. Confirm the SIM or eSIM is active

On Android go to Settings > Network & internet (or Connections) > SIMs; on iPhone go to Settings > Cellular. Confirm the line is on, not labeled “No SIM,” and that cellular/mobile data is enabled for that line.

You should see: The phone shows a recognized SIM/eSIM and carrier for the line you want to call from.

  3. Reseat a physical SIM if you have one

Power off the phone, remove the SIM tray, clean and reseat the SIM firmly, then power on and wait for network registration before calling again.

You should see: The carrier name appears and the “network not available” message no longer appears on dial.

  4. Check Wi‑Fi calling and preferred network mode

If you have Wi‑Fi, try enabling Wi‑Fi Calling in the phone’s cellular settings. Also set the network mode to include LTE/5G automatic selection rather than a locked 2G-only option if present.

You should see: Calls go out over Wi‑Fi Calling, or the phone selects a supported cellular voice network.

  5. Ask the carrier to check the line

If there is still no usable signal or the error persists after a restart, contact your carrier from another phone or chat and ask them to verify the number is active for voice and that there is no outage or provisioning block.

You should see: The carrier confirms the line status or pushes a network refresh / SIM re-provision.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact “network not available” wording, whether signal bars or carrier name appear, whether Wi‑Fi calling is on, and whether texts or mobile data still work.

Before you change anything: Note your carrier name and whether this is a new SIM or recent phone swap. Confirm you are not in Airplane Mode. Try the call from another location to rule out a dead zone. Never give account PINs or one-time codes to unexpected callers claiming they can “restore network.”
