Why won't my smart plug add to the app over Wi-Fi?

Answer

This usually means the plug never joined the phone's setup hotspot or your 2.4 GHz home Wi-Fi. Resetting the plug to pairing mode and completing setup while the phone is on the correct Wi-Fi band often fixes it.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset removes the plug from any previous app account and Wi-Fi settings.

Follow these steps

  1. Put the phone on the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network

On the phone, connect to your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network before opening the plug app. If the router combines bands, temporarily use the 2.4 GHz SSID or enable a 2.4 GHz guest network if your router provides one.

You should see: The phone is online on a Wi-Fi network the plug can join.

  2. Reset the smart plug to pairing mode

Unplug the EP10 or similar plug, plug it back in, then use the manufacturer's reset method until the LED blinks in pairing or setup mode. Wait about 30 seconds after power returns before resetting if the light is not ready.

You should see: The plug LED shows the pairing pattern described in its quick-start guide.

  3. Allow the app the permissions it needs

Open the official plug app and allow Bluetooth, local network, and location permissions if prompted. These are often required only so the phone can find the plug during setup.

You should see: The app is ready to scan for a nearby plug in pairing mode.

  4. Add the plug again and enter Wi-Fi carefully

Choose Add device or the equivalent, select the plug when it appears, and enter the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi password exactly. Stay on the setup screens until the app confirms the plug is online.

You should see: The plug appears in the app as connected instead of failing on the smart-plug Wi-Fi step.

  5. Retry after moving closer if setup still fails

If the same Wi-Fi error returns, move the plug closer to the router, repeat the reset, and try setup once more before contacting the plug maker's support.

You should see: Setup completes, or you can confirm the failure persists even next to the router.

Extra tips

What to look for: An unable to connect to your smart plug Wi-Fi message, whether the plug's LED is blinking in pairing mode, and whether the phone is on 5 GHz-only Wi-Fi.

Before you change anything: Confirm the plug model and which app the manufacturer requires. Know your 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi name and password. Stand near the plug and the router during setup. Avoid entering Wi-Fi passwords into unofficial apps or unexpected pop-ups.
