How do I turn Google Maps voice directions back on?
Answer
Voice guidance is usually muted or set to Alerts only. Start a route, tap the speaker icon, and set it to Unmuted so Maps speaks full turn-by-turn directions again.
Follow these steps
Start a test route in Google Maps
Open Google Maps, enter a nearby destination, and tap Start so navigation begins.
You should see: The turn-by-turn navigation screen appears with route guidance controls.
Open the speaker control
On the navigation screen, tap the speaker icon on the right side of the map.
You should see: You see voice options such as Unmuted, Alerts only, and Muted.
Set voice to Unmuted
Choose Unmuted, not Alerts only or Muted.
You should see: The speaker icon shows the unmuted state.
Confirm spoken directions
Continue along the test route for a short distance and listen for the next turn instruction. Raise the phone volume if needed.
You should see: You hear turn-by-turn voice directions during navigation.

Extra tips
What to look for: The speaker icon on the right side of the Google Maps navigation screen, and whether it shows Unmuted, Alerts only, or Muted
Before you change anything: Confirm you are using the official Google Maps app. Start a short test route so the navigation speaker control appears. Check that the phone volume is turned up and not on silent or Do Not Disturb. Avoid clearing Maps data unless the speaker setting change does not help.
