Why is a TV still blank after a service outage ends?

Answer

When cable or antenna service returns but the TV stays blank, the set is often stuck on the wrong input or a bad signal mode. Power-cycle the TV, confirm the correct HDMI/TV input, and check for a message such as “Unsupported signal. Please check your device output.”

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A power reset of the TV usually keeps apps and settings; do not factory-reset unless support directs you to.

Follow these steps

  1. Power on and read the screen

Turn the TV on and note the exact message or whether you only see a black screen with a working power light.

You should see: You know whether the TV shows Unsupported signal, No Signal, menus only, or total black.

  2. Switch to the correct input

Press Input/Source on the remote and select the HDMI, TV/Antenna, or cable-box input you normally use. If you use a cable/stream box, turn that box on too.

You should see: A picture returns, or the same signal error persists on the correct input.

  3. Power-reset the TV and source device

Turn the TV off, unplug the TV and the cable/stream box for about 2 minutes, plug them back in, power the box on first, then the TV. This often clears a stuck tuner or input mode after an outage without erasing apps.

You should see: The picture returns on the usual input, or the unsupported-signal message remains.

  4. Recheck the provider status

If the error continues, confirm on another device or the provider’s status page that service is truly restored, then contact the provider if only this TV/box path fails.

You should see: You know whether the outage is still affecting the line or only this TV setup.

Extra tips

What to look for: Messages like “Unsupported signal. Please check your device output,” a No Signal screen, or a lit TV with no picture from the cable box, antenna, or streaming device.

Before you change anything: Confirm other TVs or devices in the home can get the service again. Note the exact on-screen message before changing inputs. Know which source you use (cable box, antenna, HDMI device). Avoid paying anyone who claims they can remotely unlock TV service.
