How do I check whether I am being charged for a subscription or service?
Answer
Check the place you subscribed from first: Apple or Google subscriptions on the phone, the service’s own account billing page, or bank/card statements for the merchant name. Matching the merchant name to the app or website usually shows whether an active charge exists.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop if a pop-up or caller asks for payment to “remove” a charge or install unknown refund software.
Follow these steps
Check phone store subscriptions
On iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Subscriptions. On Android, open Google Play Store > profile > Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions. Look for the service name and whether it says Active or Renews.
You should see: You see an active subscription, a canceled one that still ends later, or no matching entry.
Check the service’s own billing page
Sign in on the company’s official website or app and open Account, Billing, or Membership. Confirm whether a plan shows as active and which card or payment method is listed.
You should see: The service shows an active plan with a renewal date, or clearly says there is no paid membership.
Match the bank or card merchant name
Open recent bank or card transactions and search for the service or a similar merchant name. Note the date and amount so you can compare them with the subscription screens.
You should see: You can tell whether a charge is recurring and which merchant name appears.
Cancel only after you identify the source
If you want to stop billing, cancel in the same place the subscription was created (App Store/Google Play or the website). Complete the full cancel flow and save any confirmation email or screen.
You should see: The subscription shows Canceled or ends on a stated date, with no further renewals expected.

Extra tips
What to look for: An active or renewing subscription entry, the next billing date, the exact merchant name on a bank or card statement, and whether the signup was through an app store or a website.
Before you change anything: Know which email or account was used to sign up. Have recent bank or card statements available if needed. Do not cancel anything until you confirm which product is charging you. Never share passwords or one-time codes with unexpected callers offering to “stop the charge.”
