How do I add an existing phone number when buying a new T-Mobile phone?

Answer

To keep an old number on a T-Mobile account, you usually either transfer (port) the number into T-Mobile or assign it to a new line/device on the existing account. Do this through T-Mobile’s official store, app, or account tools so the number moves cleanly onto the new phone.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Starting a port at the wrong time can temporarily interrupt service on the old phone; finish only when you are ready to move.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm where the number currently lives

Check whether the existing number is already on your T-Mobile account, on a different T-Mobile line, or still with another carrier. That determines whether you need a port-in or a line/device reassignment.

You should see: You know if this is a port from another carrier or a move within T-Mobile.

  2. Gather account transfer details if porting

If the number is leaving another carrier, sign in to that carrier’s account and collect the wireless account number, transfer/port PIN, and billing ZIP code before starting the T-Mobile purchase or activation.

You should see: You have the port credentials ready for T-Mobile activation.

  3. Start the new phone on the correct T-Mobile account

In the official T-Mobile app, website, or store, choose the existing T-Mobile account and begin purchasing or activating the new phone on that account—not as a brand-new unrelated account.

You should see: Checkout or activation shows the current T-Mobile account as the destination.

  4. Choose keep/transfer number during activation

When asked about the phone number, select the option to transfer or keep your existing number, then enter the number and port details if prompted.

You should see: T-Mobile accepts the keep/transfer request or explains what else is needed.

  5. Finish setup and test the number

Complete SIM or eSIM activation, wait for the number to finish transferring if porting, then place a test call and check texts on the new phone.

You should see: The old number works on the new T-Mobile phone, or T-Mobile shows a clear pending-port status.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether the existing number is already on T-Mobile or still with another carrier, plus account PIN, account number, and any transfer/port eligibility messages during checkout or activation.

Before you change anything: Confirm which T-Mobile account should own the new phone. Write down the exact phone number being kept. If porting from another carrier, have that carrier’s account number and transfer PIN ready. Do not share account PINs or one-time codes with unexpected callers.
