How do I reactivate a lost iPhone’s number on another iPhone?
Answer
Use Find My to mark the lost iPhone as lost, then contact your carrier (or use their app) to transfer the number/eSIM to the replacement iPhone. On the new iPhone, choose Add eSIM or set up cellular with the carrier’s QR code or transfer flow, and sign in with the same Apple ID if you still use iMessage/FaceTime.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Erasing the lost device remotely can help protect data but may make some carrier transfers slightly harder if the phone was the only trusted device—secure the Apple ID first.
Follow these steps
Secure the lost iPhone
On iCloud.com or another Apple device, open Find My, select the lost iPhone, and use Mark As Lost. Change your Apple ID password if you are concerned about unauthorized access.
You should see: The lost device is locked and shows a lost-mode message if powered on.
Transfer the number with your carrier
Sign in to your carrier’s official app or website, or call the carrier from another phone. Request a transfer of the existing line to the new iPhone (SIM swap or eSIM reissue). Ask them to deactivate service on the lost device.
You should see: The carrier confirms the number is moving to the replacement phone.
Add cellular on the new iPhone
On the new iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM (or follow the setup prompt). Scan the carrier QR code or use Transfer From Nearby iPhone / carrier app activation if offered. Restart when activation finishes.
You should see: Cellular signal appears and the old phone number shows under Cellular.
Restore iMessage and test calls
Sign in with the same Apple ID, enable iMessage/FaceTime with the phone number, place a test call, and send a text. If iMessage still routes to the lost device, toggle iMessage off and on after the number activates.
You should see: Calls, texts, and iMessage work on the new iPhone with the same number.

Extra tips
What to look for: Add eSIM prompts on the new iPhone, carrier activation status, and whether the old line still shows active in the carrier account.
Before you change anything: Have your carrier account login and the replacement iPhone ready. Know whether the lost phone used a physical SIM or eSIM. Use Find My on iCloud.com if you still have the Apple ID. Do not share carrier one-time codes with unexpected callers.
