How do I restore a WhatsApp backup if the password is forgotten?

Answer

If an encrypted WhatsApp backup password is forgotten and there is no saved encryption key, WhatsApp usually cannot decrypt that backup. You can still verify the phone number and use WhatsApp without those old chats, or restore only if you later find the password or key.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • WhatsApp cannot usually read an end-to-end encrypted backup without the password or key.
  • Third-party unlock tools that promise to crack WhatsApp backups are often scams or malware.

Follow these steps

  1. Search for the saved password or key

Check password managers, screenshots, email notes, and any printed 64-digit encryption key WhatsApp showed when encryption was enabled.

You should see: You find the password or key, or confirm both are missing.

  2. Retry restore carefully

Reopen WhatsApp, verify your phone number, and enter the password when prompted. Avoid too many random guesses if the app may limit attempts.

You should see: Chats restore successfully, or the password is still rejected.

  3. Continue without the encrypted backup if necessary

If the password and key are unrecoverable, skip restoring that encrypted backup and finish setup. New chats will work, but the old encrypted backup remains inaccessible.

You should see: WhatsApp opens for messaging without the old encrypted history.

  4. Set up a recoverable backup going forward

After you are back in, create a new backup and store the password or encryption key in a secure password manager immediately.

You should see: Future backups can be restored because the secret is saved.

Extra tips

What to look for: Prompts for an encrypted backup password, an option to use an encryption key, and whether a Google Drive backup is encrypted or unencrypted.

Before you change anything: Search password managers and written notes for the WhatsApp backup password. Do not uninstall WhatsApp repeatedly if you still have a chance to enter the correct password. Never send your backup password or encryption key to unexpected helpers. Know that skipping restore usually means those older chats stay unavailable.
