How do I unlock a new iPad stuck on the iCloud sign-in screen?

Try a forced restart first—it often clears a stuck Activation Lock or iCloud sign-in glitch without erasing data. If the screen returns, confirm you are using the correct Apple ID for that iPad, charge for 30 minutes, and retry. Activation Lock cannot be bypassed without the owner’s Apple ID.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Activation Lock bypass services are scams and can lead to stolen-device issues.

Follow these steps

  1. Force-restart the iPad

    Use Apple’s forced restart for your iPad model (for many models with a Home button: hold Home + Power until the Apple logo). This does not erase data by itself.

    You should see: The iPad reboots and either continues setup or redisplays iCloud sign-in more responsively.

  2. Charge and retry

    Plug the iPad into a wall charger for about 30 minutes, then perform the same forced restart and try signing in again.

    You should see: Sign-in accepts correct credentials, or the same Activation Lock remains.

  3. Sign in with the owning Apple ID only

    Enter the Apple ID password that previously activated this iPad. If you bought it new from Apple, use your Apple ID. If it is secondhand and you lack the ID, stop and contact the seller.

    You should see: Activation completes, or you confirm the device is still linked to another account.

  4. Have the previous owner remove the device

    Ask the previous owner to erase the iPad or remove it from their Apple ID device list at iCloud/Find Devices, then retry setup.

    You should see: The iCloud lock clears and you can finish setup with your Apple ID.

What to look for: An iCloud or Apple ID sign-in screen that blocks setup, possibly with an error on the password or sign-in line

Before you change anything: Ask the seller for the Apple ID email if the iPad was used before. Do not pay third parties who claim Activation Lock removal. Charge the iPad with a known-good cable and wall adapter. Have your own Apple ID ready only if you are the rightful owner.
