Why does a landline phone say "No Line" after internet service is restored?
Answer
This usually means the phone line needs its own restart step after an outage, even though internet service has already returned. Fully power-cycling the gateway and testing with a simple corded phone in the correct port often clears it within several minutes.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Handle power cords and outlets carefully when unplugging equipment; avoid touching plugs with wet hands.
Follow these steps
Power off the gateway fully
Unplug the power cord from the gateway, the main internet and phone box, and leave it unplugged for a full 60 seconds.
You should see: All lights on the gateway turn off completely.
Restore power in the correct order
If there is a separate fiber box between the wall and the gateway, plug that in first and wait for its lights to stabilize, then plug the gateway back in.
You should see: The fiber box's status light turns solid, followed by the gateway's internet and phone lights.
Wait for full reconnection
Allow 5 to 10 minutes for both boxes to fully reconnect before testing the phone again, since phone service often takes longer to register than internet.
You should see: The gateway's phone light turns solid or shows a different status than "No Line."
Test with a simple corded phone
Unplug the cordless phone base from the wall jack and plug a basic corded phone directly into one of the phone-style ports on the back of the gateway.
You should see: The corded phone produces a normal dial tone, or still shows no line.
Report the issue as a phone-specific outage
If the corded phone still shows no line after the gateway has been power-cycled, contact the provider and specifically report it as a home phone or voice service issue, separate from the internet outage.
You should see: The provider confirms whether the voice line is provisioned correctly or schedules a service check.

Extra tips
What to look for: The exact wording shown on the gateway's phone status light or display, such as "No Line," and whether a corded phone plugged directly into the gateway's phone port also fails.
Before you change anything: Confirm internet service is fully working again on other devices before troubleshooting the phone line. Locate the phone-style ports on the back of the gateway, separate from the internet or ethernet ports. Have a simple corded phone available for testing, since cordless base stations can have their own issues. Avoid unplugging separate fiber equipment unless specifically instructed, since it can take longer to reconnect.
