Why will a new GoPro not charge at all?

Answer

A new GoPro that will not charge often needs a firmly seated battery and a standard 5V USB wall charger for 30–60 minutes before the charge indicator appears.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Avoid charging in wet conditions or with damaged cables.

Follow these steps

  1. Reseat the battery

Power the camera off if it turns on at all, remove the battery for about one minute, then reinsert it firmly until it clicks and close the door fully.

You should see: The battery sits flush and the door closes without a gap.

  2. Charge from a 5V USB wall adapter

Connect the camera to a standard 5V USB wall charger with a known-good cable and leave it undisturbed for 30 to 60 minutes.

You should see: A charge light or on-screen charging icon appears, or the camera powers on afterward.

  3. Try a different cable and charger

If nothing happens, swap both the USB cable and the wall adapter, still avoiding low-power ports that may not supply enough current.

You should see: Charging begins with the alternate cable or charger, or both known-good sources fail.

  4. Inspect the battery and USB port

Look for a protective film on the battery contacts, debris in the USB port, or a battery that does not match the camera model.

You should see: An obvious contact or compatibility issue is found, or hardware looks normal.

  5. Contact GoPro support if it still will not charge

If a seated original battery and multiple 5V chargers never show charging activity, contact GoPro through the official support site for warranty options.

You should see: Support confirms next steps for an out-of-box charging failure.

Extra tips

What to look for: No charge LED or on-screen battery activity after connecting USB power, and a battery that may not be fully seated.

Before you change anything: Use the USB cable that came with the camera if available. Prefer a 5V USB wall charger over a laptop USB port. Confirm the battery door closes fully. Avoid damaged or unknown high-wattage chargers that are not compatible with the camera.
