Why do WhatsApp messages disappear or show as deleted on Android?

Answer

A single deleted WhatsApp message is often caused by disappearing messages or a sender deleting their own message, not a hack. Still check chat disappearing-message settings, review recently installed apps, and confirm Google account security if device access is also suspected.

Follow these steps

  1. Check disappearing messages

Open the affected chat, tap the contact or group name at the top, and look for Disappearing Messages.

You should see: You can see whether timed deletion is on for that conversation.

  2. Scan for risky apps

Go to Settings > Security and privacy > App security (wording varies by phone) and run a scan if available.

You should see: The scan completes with no threats, or it flags an app to review.

  3. Review recently installed apps

Go to Settings > Apps, sort by recently installed, and look for anything you do not recognize.

You should see: Unknown apps are identified for removal, or the recent list looks normal.

  4. Check Google account recovery details

In the Google Account security settings on the phone or a browser, review the recovery email, two-step verification status, and any unfamiliar changes.

You should see: Recovery details look familiar, or an unexpected change is visible.

  5. Remove unrecognized devices

In Google Account device activity, sign out or remove any device you do not recognize, because account access can affect backups and some app data.

You should see: Only known devices remain signed in.

  6. Review device admin apps

Open Settings and check Device admin apps or similar security settings for anything unfamiliar, then disable and uninstall what does not belong.

You should see: No unexpected device-admin apps remain enabled.

Extra tips

What to look for: The exact label “This message was deleted,” a Disappearing Messages setting in the chat info screen, unfamiliar apps, and unexpected Google account or device-admin changes.

Before you change anything: Note which chats show deleted or missing messages. Avoid factory-resetting the phone until simpler checks are done. Sign in only through official WhatsApp and Google account screens. Never share WhatsApp or Google verification codes with unexpected callers.
