How do I fix one hearing aid that stopped working after months of normal use?

Answer

When only one hearing aid fails after months of use, the cause is often moisture, a blocked or damaged dome, a dirty contact, a dead battery or charge issue, or a pairing problem with the companion app. Checking the failed side physically before factory-resetting usually identifies the fix.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not insert sharp objects into the microphone, receiver, or charging ports.

Follow these steps

  1. Compare both aids and note indicators

Put both aids in the charger or turn them on and note any lights, tones, or app status for the right aid versus the left.

You should see: You can tell whether the right aid has power, is charging, or shows an error the left aid does not.

  2. Inspect the right aid for damage or blockage

Check the right aid for moisture, cracks, a loose or missing dome, wax buildup, or bent charging contacts. Clean only with the manufacturer’s recommended method.

You should see: Any obvious moisture, debris, or loose dome is found and corrected, or you confirm the aid looks undamaged.

  3. Recharge or replace power on the failed side

Seat the right aid firmly in the charger until the charge light behaves normally, or install a fresh battery if the model uses one. Wait until it has enough charge to turn on.

You should see: The right aid shows a normal charge or power indicator.

  4. Re-pair the right aid in the companion app

Open the official hearing-aid app, forget or disconnect only the right aid if the app allows, then pair that side again following the on-screen steps.

You should see: The app shows the right aid connected and streaming or amplifying again.

  5. Contact the manufacturer or fitter if it stays dead

If the right aid still has no sound after cleaning, charging, and re-pairing, contact the hearing-aid maker or the clinic that fitted them with the model and which side failed.

You should see: You have a repair, replacement, or warranty path for the failed aid.

Extra tips

What to look for: Lights, sounds, or error indicators on the right aid or in the hearing-aid app when you try to use it

Before you change anything: Confirm which side failed and whether the other aid still works. Note the brand and model printed on the aid, charger, or app. Have a dry cloth and any official cleaning tools ready; avoid sharp objects in the receiver or mic ports. Do not force a dome or wax guard if it is stuck.
