How do I fix a Roku device that will not connect to the internet?

Answer

When Roku says it is not connecting, the wireless password, router state, or a stuck Roku network profile is usually at fault. Restart the router and Roku, then forget and rejoin the Wi-Fi network from Roku’s network settings.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Ignore pop-up ads or sites claiming they can unlock Roku internet access for a fee.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart router and Roku

Unplug the router for 60 seconds and plug it back in. When internet returns on a phone, restart the Roku device or TV from Settings or by power-cycling it.

You should see: Both network and Roku start fresh before the next connection attempt.

  2. Run a wireless connection check

On Roku, open Settings > Network > Check connection and note whether it fails at wireless, internet, or softest quality.

You should see: You know whether Roku cannot join Wi-Fi or joins Wi-Fi but has no internet.

  3. Forget the network and join again

In Network settings, set up a new wireless connection, select your SSID, and re-enter the password carefully.

You should see: Roku reports a successful connection and the home screen can stream.

  4. Try a phone hotspot to isolate the router

If home Wi-Fi still fails, temporarily join a phone hotspot. If hotspot works, focus on router settings or range; if hotspot fails too, look at the Roku unit itself.

You should see: You can tell whether the problem follows the home router or the Roku device.

Extra tips

What to look for: A not connecting message on Roku, whether other devices still have internet, and whether the correct SSID is selected.

Before you change anything: Confirm the Wi-Fi password on a working phone. Restart the router before changing Roku settings. Use the on-screen Roku network menu rather than third-party tools.
