How do I fix a Starlink installation that says check for obstructions?

Answer

Move or raise the Starlink dish so it has a clear view of the sky, then rerun the obstruction check in the official Starlink app. Trees, roofs, and nearby walls are the usual cause of a “Check for Obstructions” warning—not a bad account login.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Roof and ladder work can cause serious falls—use proper safety gear or hire a qualified installer if you are unsure.

Follow these steps

  1. Run the app obstruction check in place

Open the official Starlink app, go to the dish / obstruction tools, and run a check with the dish powered in its current spot. Note which directions show red or blocked sky.

You should see: You see which sides of the sky are obstructed so you know where to move the dish.

  2. Relocate for a clearer sky view

Move the dish away from trees, chimneys, and roof edges toward the clearest northern (or app-indicated) sky view for your location. Raise the mount if ground level is boxed in by buildings.

You should see: The dish sits with fewer nearby objects in its upward field of view.

  3. Confirm the dish is level and connectors are seated

Check that the mount is stable and roughly level per Starlink’s guidance, and that the cable clicks fully into the dish and router ends without moisture in the connector.

You should see: Hardware is secure and the app still shows the dish online while you retest.

  4. Rerun obstruction check and wait for a clear result

Run the obstruction check again after relocating. If the app still warns, try one more higher or more open position rather than leaving the dish under partial cover.

You should see: Obstruction percentage drops to an acceptable level and the check-for-obstructions warning clears.

  5. Finish setup only after the path looks clear

Once the app shows a clear or low-obstruction path, complete router setup and run a speed or connectivity test in the Starlink app before sealing cable runs outdoors.

You should see: Starlink shows online service without the obstruction install block.

Extra tips

What to look for: The “Check for Obstructions” status in the Starlink app, the obstruction map or percentage, and whether the dish is under eaves, trees, or a balcony overhang.

Before you change anything: Install only on a secure mount rated for your Starlink kit. Keep the cable undamaged and connectors dry. Use the official Starlink app for obstruction scans. Follow local rules for roof or exterior mounting; stop if you are not comfortable working at height.
