Why can a phone send texts but not make or receive calls?

When texting still works but voice fails, the phone often needs a quick network refresh: Airplane mode, then check VoLTE / 4G calling and preferred network type before testing another outbound call.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Stop before a factory reset unless you have backed up photos and accounts; a network toggle usually comes first.
Follow these steps
Toggle Airplane mode
Open Quick Settings, turn Airplane mode on, wait about 30 seconds, then turn it off and wait for signal bars to return.
You should see: Mobile signal returns and the phone shows a network type such as LTE or 5G.
Turn on VoLTE or 4G Calling
Go to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs (or Mobile network), open your carrier SIM, and enable VoLTE, 4G Calling, or Enhanced LTE Calling if the option is shown.
You should see: VoLTE / 4G Calling shows as on for that SIM.
Check preferred network type
In Settings > Network & internet > SIMs or Internet, open Preferred network type and choose the carrier recommended option (often 5G/LTE automatic).
You should see: The preferred network setting saves and the phone reconnects to the network.
Test one outbound call
Place a short call to a known number and note whether the status bar still shows LTE/5G during or after the call.
You should see: The call connects and stays up, or you get a clear carrier error instead of silence.
