How do I fix Quantum wheelchair error 203 with brake 1 and 2 disconnected?

Answer

Error 203 on a Quantum wheelchair usually means the controller is not detecting a solid connection to the brake circuits. Power the chair fully off, then firmly reseat any loose motor or brake connectors before powering back on.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not drive the chair if the brakes are reported as disconnected—stopping power may be unreliable.
  • Never bypass or defeat brake circuits to clear an error code.
  • If connectors or wiring look burned, crushed, or broken, stop and have a qualified technician repair them.

Follow these steps

  1. Power the chair fully off

Turn the joystick or power switch fully off and wait at least 30 seconds so the controller fully shuts down.

You should see: The display goes blank and the chair will not drive.

  2. Inspect motor and brake connectors

With the chair off, look at the connectors near each drive motor and along the harness toward the controller for plugs that are loose, partially seated, or damaged.

You should see: You can see whether any connector is unplugged, crooked, or has bent pins.

  3. Unplug and firmly reseat loose connectors

Unplug any connector that looks even slightly loose, check for debris or bent pins, then push it firmly straight back in until it seats fully.

You should see: Each connector clicks or seats flush with no gap.

  4. Power on and check the error

Turn the chair back on and watch the display for error 203 or a clear ready state.

You should see: Error 203 is gone, or the same code returns immediately so you know further service is needed.

  5. Contact Quantum or your dealer if the code returns

If error 203 comes back right away, stop driving and contact your wheelchair dealer or Quantum support with the code and what you checked.

You should see: You have a service path for brake harness or controller diagnosis.

Extra tips

What to look for: Error code 203 and wording that brake 1 and brake 2 are disconnected on the Quantum display

Before you change anything: Park the chair on a level surface and set it so it cannot roll while you work. Power the chair fully off before unplugging or reseating any connectors. Note which connectors look loose, pinched, or damaged so you can describe them to a technician if needed. Do not cut, splice, or bypass brake wiring.
