How do I report a garage door opener left in an Uber or rideshare car?

Answer

Use the Uber app Help section and choose the Lost Item option for the trip where the opener was left. If you did not request the ride yourself, ask the person who booked it to open that trip’s Help flow, or use Uber’s lost‑item support path for trips arranged by someone else. Do not share home address details in public posts.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not send money or card details to anyone outside the official Uber lost‑item flow who claims they found your opener.
  • A missing garage remote is a home‑security risk; reprogram or disable it if recovery is delayed.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the trip’s Lost Item help

In the Uber app, go to Account or Help, find the trip, and choose the Lost Item option. Describe a garage door opener (brand/color if known) without including unnecessary home security details.

You should see: Uber creates a lost‑item request tied to that trip.

  2. If someone else booked the ride

Ask the person whose Uber account was used to open the same Lost Item flow, or follow Uber’s help path for reporting an item from a trip arranged by someone else.

You should see: The request reaches the correct trip and driver contact path.

  3. Watch for driver contact options

Follow any in‑app prompts to call or message the driver. Pay only official contact fees shown in the Uber app, not random payment requests by text.

You should see: You either arrange a pickup/return or learn the item was not found.

  4. Secure the garage if the opener is not recovered

If the opener cannot be found quickly, change or clear the garage door opener codes per the door opener manual and stop using the missing remote.

You should see: The missing remote can no longer open the garage.

Extra tips

What to look for: The trip receipt date/time, vehicle description if known, Lost Item option under Help, and any driver response or contact fee notice in the app.

Before you change anything: Find the trip date and approximate pickup or drop‑off time. Ask the account holder who booked the ride to help if it was not your account. Use only the official Uber app or website. Avoid posting plate numbers, home addresses, or full names publicly while searching.
