How do I restore phone service after losing signal crossing into Canada?

Answer

Losing service at the Canada border is usually a roaming or plan issue, not a broken phone. Confirm the plan includes Canada roaming, refresh the network, and if the phone says outgoing calling is disabled, contact the carrier (often via *611 or Wi-Fi support) to restore the line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Roaming outside your home country can add charges if your plan does not include Canada; confirm plan terms before heavy data use.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm Canada roaming on the plan

On Wi-Fi, open your carrier account app or plan details and check whether Canada roaming or a Canada talk/text/data add-on is included and active. If it is off, add or enable it through the official account tools.

You should see: You know whether the plan is allowed to use Canadian networks.

  2. Refresh the radio with Airplane mode

Turn Airplane mode on for about 30 seconds, then turn it off. Wait for the carrier name and signal bars to return, then test whether mobile data or emergency services status changes.

You should see: The phone re-registers on a network or still shows a clear out-of-service state.

  3. Try manual network selection

Go to Settings > Mobile network (wording varies), turn off automatically select network, and try a major Canadian network such as TELUS first, then another listed network if needed.

You should see: The phone attaches to a Canadian partner network or reports that registration failed.

  4. Restart and retest GPS on data or Wi-Fi

Restart the phone. For navigation, use Wi-Fi calling/maps where available, or mobile data once roaming is active. GPS location can work without cellular, but map downloads need data or Wi-Fi.

You should see: Maps can show location on Wi-Fi, or cellular data resumes for turn-by-turn navigation.

  5. Contact carrier care if calling stays disabled

If the screen says outgoing calling is disabled and to call Client Care at *611, try *611 when possible, or reach the same carrier over Wi-Fi chat/phone using official support. Ask them to restore roaming and outbound calling on the line.

You should see: Carrier support re-enables roaming or outbound calling and service returns.

Extra tips

What to look for: No Service after the border, a message that outgoing calling is disabled with Client Care at *611, and whether mobile data and GPS apps also fail

Before you change anything: Check whether your plan includes Canada talk, text, and data roaming. Prefer Wi-Fi for account login and maps while cellular is down. Do not factory-reset the phone to fix roaming. Never share account PINs or codes with unexpected callers.
