Why am I not receiving text messages with my 2FA codes?

Answer

Missing 2FA texts usually mean the code is going to an outdated or blocked number, the phone has poor SMS reception, or the carrier is filtering the message. Confirm the number on the account and that SMS can be received before changing security settings.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Never share a 2FA code with anyone who contacts you unexpectedly, even if they claim to be support.
  • Do not remove your only verification method until a backup sign-in option works.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the phone can receive SMS

Turn off airplane mode, confirm mobile signal (or Wi‑Fi calling), and ask someone to send a normal text to the same number. Also check spam, blocked, or filtered message folders.

You should see: You know whether SMS delivery works at all on that phone.

  2. Check blocked numbers and Do Not Disturb

On Android, open Messages or Phone settings and review blocked numbers, spam protection, and Do Not Disturb. Remove blocks only for unknown short-code senders if you are sure they are from the service you use.

You should see: Nothing on the phone is clearly blocking verification texts.

  3. Verify the number saved on the account

Sign in with a working method (password plus authenticator, email code, or recovery codes). Open the account’s Security or Verification settings and confirm the mobile number matches the phone you are holding.

You should see: The listed number is correct, or you can see that an old number is still on file.

  4. Update or re-add the phone number

If the number is wrong or stuck, remove the outdated mobile number only after another sign-in method works, save, then add the correct number and request a new code.

You should see: A new verification text arrives, or the account clearly shows the updated number.

  5. Add a non-SMS backup method

While signed in, set up an authenticator app or save recovery codes so a future missing text does not lock you out.

You should see: You have at least one sign-in method that does not depend on SMS.

Extra tips

What to look for: Whether any SMS arrive at all, whether the account lists the correct mobile number, and whether blocked or filtered message settings are hiding the code

Before you change anything: Confirm which account is sending the code and which phone number it should use. Use a backup sign-in method if you have one before removing the only phone number. Stay on the official account website or app when changing security settings. Never share a 2FA code with anyone who calls or texts you unexpectedly.
