How do I update the payment method on a Kindle or Amazon account?
Answer
Update the card in Amazon’s official Payment methods settings on amazon.com or in the Amazon app, then retry the Kindle purchase or content download. Kindle devices usually use the payment method stored on the Amazon account, not a separate Kindle-only card screen.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Never give card numbers or Amazon passwords to unexpected callers or texts.
Follow these steps
Open Amazon Payment methods
On a phone or computer, sign in at amazon.com or the Amazon app, then open Account, then Payments or Payment methods.
You should see: Your saved cards and the option to add a card appear.
Add or edit the card
Add the new card or edit the existing one, then save it and set it as the default for 1-Click if that option is shown.
You should see: The new payment method is saved on the Amazon account.
Retry on the Kindle
On the Kindle, retry the purchase, content download, or subscription step that failed.
You should see: The payment goes through, or a clearer Amazon error appears.
Check Kindle registration account
If it still fails, confirm the Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account where you updated the card.
You should see: The Kindle and payment account match, or you identify a mismatch to fix.

Extra tips
What to look for: Amazon account Payment methods, 1-Click settings, and any card declined or update payment message on the Kindle
Before you change anything: Sign in only at the official Amazon website or app. Have the new card details ready, but do not share them with callers. Confirm you are editing the same Amazon account used on the Kindle. Avoid links from unexpected emails or texts.
