Why can’t I add a European eSIM to my phone?
Answer
That error usually means the phone is carrier-locked, not that the eSIM “slot” needs a special unlock code. Confirm the device is paid off and unlocked with the original carrier before installing a European travel eSIM.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deleting your primary eSIM without a backup plan can leave you without service.
- Only install eSIMs from the travel provider’s official app or email QR code.
Follow these steps
Confirm lock status
Check Settings > Network & internet > SIMs / Mobile network for lock notices, then ask the original carrier whether the device is unlocked.
You should see: You know whether an unlock is required before any foreign eSIM will install.
Request a carrier unlock if needed
If locked, request an unlock from the original carrier once the phone is paid off and eligible, then restart the phone.
You should see: The carrier confirms the device is unlocked.
Free an eSIM profile if the list is full
In SIMs settings, remove only unused travel or old eSIM profiles you no longer need, keeping your primary line until the new plan works.
You should see: There is room to add another eSIM.
Install the European eSIM
Use the travel provider’s official QR code or activation flow under Download a SIM instead / Add carrier.
You should see: The European eSIM appears in the SIM list and can be turned on for data abroad.

Extra tips
What to look for: Message like “Cellular plans from this carrier cannot be added,” or inability to scan a travel eSIM QR code on a Pixel.
Before you change anything: Note the original carrier and whether the phone is fully paid off. Screenshot the exact error. Do not delete your primary eSIM until you know how to restore service.
