Why does a new phone show network not available after inserting the SIM?

Answer

This usually means the SIM is not seated correctly, the line is not active with the carrier, or the account needs a payment or recharge before mobile service will register.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Ignore popups or websites that ask for payment to unlock mobile network service outside the carrier’s official account.

Follow these steps

  1. Confirm the line is active with the carrier

Check the carrier account online or by phone and recharge or pay any past-due balance before further hardware troubleshooting.

You should see: The account shows as active and in good standing.

  2. Reseat the SIM in the correct slot

Power off the phone, remove the tray, and place the SIM fully in the SIM position—not the memory-card position—then reinsert the tray firmly.

You should see: The phone detects the SIM after restart, or still shows a clear SIM or network message.

  3. Inspect the SIM and tray

Check the SIM and tray for dirt, bent corners, or moisture. Wipe gently if dusty, and do not force a damaged card.

You should see: The SIM looks clean and undamaged, or damage is identified.

  4. Restart and toggle Airplane mode

Restart the phone, turn Airplane mode on for about 15 seconds and off again, and confirm mobile networks are enabled.

You should see: Signal bars or the carrier name appear, or the same error persists with the SIM detected.

  5. Test the SIM in another phone if needed

If the line is active but this phone still shows no network, test the same SIM in another unlocked compatible phone, or ask the carrier whether a replacement SIM is required.

You should see: Either the SIM works elsewhere, pointing to a phone issue, or fails everywhere, pointing to the SIM or account.

Extra tips

What to look for: Messages such as Network not available, No SIM card inserted, or Mobile network not available after inserting the SIM

Before you change anything: Confirm the carrier account is paid and active, especially if a recharge is due. Know which tray slot is for the SIM versus a memory card. Handle the SIM and tray gently to avoid bending the card. Do not pay unexpected unlock fees from popups or unknown websites.
