Why does Kindle say I need a membership after I already paid for Kindle Unlimited?

Answer

Confirm the Kindle is registered to the same Amazon account that is billed for Kindle Unlimited, then open Manage Your Content and Devices on amazon.com to verify the membership is Active. Sign the device out and back in if the account email does not match.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only change registration through Amazon’s official device settings or website.

Follow these steps

  1. Check the Kindle account email

On the Kindle, open Settings and note the Amazon account email shown for the device. Compare it with the email on your billing receipts.

You should see: You see whether the device and billing account match.

  2. Verify Unlimited status on Amazon

On amazon.com, open Account > Memberships and Subscriptions or Kindle Unlimited settings and confirm the plan shows Active with the expected renewal dates.

You should see: Membership is Active, canceled, or missing on that login.

  3. Register the Kindle to the billed account

If the emails differ, deregister the Kindle and register it to the Amazon account that has Unlimited. Then retry the download.

You should see: The membership prompt clears and the book downloads.

  4. Contact Amazon if still blocked

From Amazon’s official Help page, ask them to check whether the Unlimited benefit is attached to the correct account and device. Provide the payment dates that posted.

You should see: Amazon restores access or explains the mismatched account.

Extra tips

What to look for: A membership required message on Kindle despite recent Unlimited charges on an Amazon statement.

Before you change anything: Have the email that receives Amazon billing receipts. Check whether anyone else in the home has a separate Amazon login on the Kindle. Do not buy a second membership until you confirm the first is inactive.
