Why does my Pixel 8a only show Emergency calls on Verizon?
Answer
Emergency calls only usually means the phone cannot register on Verizon—often a SIM/eSIM provisioning problem, account suspension, network outage, or bad APN/radio state. Toggle Airplane mode, confirm the Verizon SIM/eSIM is present, and check the Verizon account status before replacing hardware.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Deleting the eSIM without a replacement plan can extend downtime.
Follow these steps
Reset the radio quickly
Turn on Airplane mode for 15 seconds, turn it off, then restart the Pixel 8a and wait for signal bars to return.
You should see: Normal Verizon signal returns, or Emergency calls only persists.
Check SIM/eSIM status
Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and confirm the Verizon SIM/eSIM is on. Reseat a physical SIM or ask Verizon before deleting an eSIM.
You should see: The Verizon line shows as active in SIM settings.
Verify the Verizon account and outages
Sign in to the official Verizon app or website to confirm the line is active and not suspended, and check for a local outage.
You should see: You know whether the problem is account/network-side or device-side.
Repair provisioning with Verizon
If the account is active but the phone still says Emergency calls only, contact Verizon to refresh the SIM/eSIM profile and retest calls with Wi‑Fi off.
You should see: Service registers on Verizon or Verizon provides a replacement eSIM/SIM.

Extra tips
What to look for: Emergency calls only or SOS, SIM status in Settings, Verizon account active/suspended status, and outage reports
Before you change anything: Check whether other Verizon phones nearby have service. Have the Verizon account login ready. Do not delete the eSIM until Verizon confirms a replacement plan. Avoid random APN files from unofficial sites.
