How do I reconnect a landline phone after installing a TV box?

Answer

Plug the landline phone into the modem’s Phone 1 or Tel 1 port with a standard phone cord, power-cycle the TV box and modem, then wait until the modem is online and check for a Phone/Tel light. If that light stays off, the provider usually must reactivate the phone line.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Only unplug power cords; do not open the modem or TV box chassis.

Follow these steps

  1. Connect the phone to Phone 1 or Tel 1

Plug the landline phone (or cordless base) directly into the modem’s Phone 1 or Tel 1 port using a standard phone cord. Do not use an Ethernet/data port by mistake.

You should see: The handset is physically connected to the correct voice port on the modem.

  2. Power off the TV box

Unplug power from the TV box and leave it unplugged while you restart the modem so the network can settle cleanly.

You should see: The TV box is fully powered down.

  3. Restart the modem

Unplug power from the modem for about 60 seconds, plug it back in, and wait 5 to 10 minutes until internet lights show it is fully online.

You should see: The modem finishes booting and shows a normal online status.

  4. Check the Phone or Tel light

Look for a Phone 1 or Tel 1 light on the modem. Lift the handset and listen for dial tone. Then plug the TV box back in and let it start.

You should see: The Phone/Tel light turns on and you hear dial tone, or you confirm the light stays off.

  5. Contact the provider if the light stays off

If there is still no Phone/Tel light and no dial tone after a full modem restart, contact your internet/phone provider and report that Phone 1/Tel 1 stays dark after connecting the TV box and restarting.

You should see: The provider reactivates or repairs the voice line on the account.

Extra tips

What to look for: Modem Phone 1 or Tel 1 port and light status; TV messages about device activation

Before you change anything: Note which ports on the modem are labeled Phone, Tel, or Voice. Unplug power only—avoid opening sealed equipment. Keep the TV box and modem power adapters handy. Do not share account passwords with unexpected callers claiming to restore your line.
