Internet & Wi-FiTV & Streaming

Why is a smart TV not getting full Wi-Fi speed?

Answer

This is usually caused by the TV's Wi-Fi hardware being slower than the router, distance from the router, or outdated TV software, rather than a problem with the internet plan itself. Restarting the network and checking for a TV software update solves it in most cases.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the modem and router

Unplug the modem and router from power, wait about 30 seconds, then plug the modem back in first and let it fully reconnect before plugging in the router.

You should see: The router's internet light turns solid, and devices reconnect automatically.

  2. Check for a TV software update

Open the TV's settings menu and look for a system or software update option, usually listed under "About" or "System."

You should see: The TV reports it is up to date, or installs an available update.

  3. Connect to the faster Wi-Fi band if available

If the router offers separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, connect the TV to the 5GHz network when it is close to the router, since it is usually faster over shorter distances.

You should see: The TV's network settings show a different network name and often a stronger signal.

  4. Reduce interference and competing devices

Pause large downloads or streams on other devices, and keep the router away from cordless phones, microwaves, or thick walls where possible.

You should see: The TV's speed test result improves when fewer devices are active.

  5. Consider a wired connection

If the TV has an ethernet port, connect it directly to the router with a cable, which is usually faster and more stable than Wi-Fi.

You should see: The TV shows a wired connection and a speed test result closer to the plan's advertised speed.

Extra tips

What to look for: The TV's built-in network settings screen, any speed test result shown inside a streaming app, and whether the TV's software or firmware is up to date.

Before you change anything: Confirm which TV brand and streaming platform is being used. Check what speed other devices get on the same Wi-Fi network for comparison. Confirm the router and internet plan's advertised speed before assuming the TV is the problem. Avoid changing router settings unless comfortable reversing them.
