Why won’t a TV turn on after sitting unused for weeks?

Answer

After a long idle period, many TVs fail to wake because of a stuck power state, a loose outlet/power strip, or a set that needs a hard power reset. Confirm wall power first, try the TV’s own power button, then unplug the set for several minutes before testing again.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • Do not open the TV or probe internal boards; power-supply faults can be hazardous.

Follow these steps

  1. Test the outlet and power path

    Plug a lamp or phone charger into the same outlet. If using a power strip, plug the TV directly into the wall for this test.

    You should see: You confirm the outlet works, or you find the strip/outlet is dead.

  2. Try the TV power button

    Press the physical power button on the TV itself, not only the remote, and watch for a light, sound, or screen response.

    You should see: The TV starts, shows a standby light change, or still shows no response.

  3. Do a hard power reset

    Unplug the TV from the wall, wait at least 5 minutes, press and hold the TV power button for about 30 seconds while unplugged, then plug it back in and try power again.

    You should see: The TV powers on, or the same no-power symptom continues.

  4. Note lights or codes

    If it still will not start, write down any blinking light pattern or on-screen message. For a Sony Bravia like the KDL-65W850C, compare that pattern with Sony’s support guidance before arranging service.

    You should see: You have a clear symptom description (no light, blinking code, or click) for support or repair.

Extra tips

What to look for: Any standby light, blinking codes, clicking sounds, or brief screen flashes when you press power on the TV or remote.

Before you change anything: Confirm the TV model if possible (for example Sony KDL-65W850C). Try a different wall outlet known to work with a lamp or phone charger. Replace remote batteries again only after testing the TV power button. Do not open the TV chassis; internal power repairs are not a DIY step.
