Internet & Wi-Fi

How do I fix an Amazon Echo that will not connect to Wi‑Fi?

Answer

When an Echo suddenly loses internet, the usual fix is to restart the router and Echo, then finish setup again in the Alexa app on your phone. Confirm the phone is on the same 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi network the Echo can use before changing advanced router settings.

Before you start: stop right away if…

  • A factory reset removes the Echo from the current Wi‑Fi setup and requires full Alexa app setup again.
  • Do not follow popups that ask you to pay a third party to reconnect Alexa devices.

Follow these steps

  1. Restart the network and Echo

Unplug the router and modem for 30 seconds, plug them back in, wait until internet returns on a phone, then unplug the Echo for 30 seconds and plug it back in.

You should see: The Echo finishes booting and either rejoins Wi‑Fi or shows it still needs setup.

  2. Reopen the Alexa app on the same Wi‑Fi

On your phone, join the home Wi‑Fi network, open the Alexa app, and check whether the Echo appears as Offline or asks to be set up again.

You should see: The app shows the Echo status and offers reconnect or setup options.

  3. Update the Echo Wi‑Fi connection

In the Alexa app, open Devices, select the Echo, choose Change Wi‑Fi or Connect to Wi‑Fi / Set up device, and enter the correct network password. Prefer a 2.4 GHz network if your router splits bands and 5 GHz setup fails.

You should see: The Echo connects and the app reports online status.

  4. Move closer and retest simple requests

Place the Echo closer to the router temporarily, then ask for the time or weather. If it still fails, confirm no VPN on the phone is interfering with setup and retry the Wi‑Fi change step.

You should see: The Echo answers online requests, or the failure points to password or band issues.

  5. Factory reset only if setup still fails

If the Echo never joins after the steps above, use Amazon’s reset action for your Echo model, then run setup again in the official Alexa app.

You should see: The Echo returns to setup mode and can be linked to the account on a working network.

Extra tips

What to look for: Orange or pulsing light rings on the Echo, offline status in the Alexa app, and whether other devices still use the same Wi‑Fi network.

Before you change anything: Know your Wi‑Fi network name and password. Keep the phone with the Alexa app nearby on the same home network. Avoid factory-resetting the Echo until a simple restart and rejoin fail. Use only the official Alexa app for setup.
