How do I fix a Kasa EP40 smart plug that will not connect to Wi-Fi?
Answer
Most Kasa plugs only join a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. Temporarily disable 5 GHz or use a 2.4 GHz-only setup path on the router, then add the EP40 again in the Kasa app.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Only change router settings from the official router app or admin page. Stop if a site or popup asks for payment or remote access to fix Wi-Fi.
Follow these steps
Confirm the plug is in setup mode
Plug in the EP40, wait for the status light pattern described in the Kasa app for a new device, and follow any on-screen prompt to put the plug back into pairing mode if needed.
You should see: The plug shows the setup or pairing light pattern and appears ready to add in the Kasa app.
Make the network 2.4 GHz-friendly
On your router or mesh app, open Settings or Troubleshooting for a device that will not connect, then temporarily disable 5 GHz or enable a 2.4 GHz-only / IoT setup option if available.
You should see: Phones and computers may stay online on 2.4 GHz while 5 GHz is briefly off, and the Kasa app can offer a 2.4 GHz network.
Add the EP40 again in the Kasa app
Open the Kasa app, choose Add Device, select the EP40, enter the correct Wi-Fi password, and complete the setup prompts.
You should see: The EP40 finishes joining Wi-Fi and appears as an online device in the Kasa app.
Restore normal Wi-Fi bands
After the plug shows as connected, turn 5 GHz back on or leave dual-band settings as they were before setup.
You should see: The EP40 stays online in the Kasa app and other devices can use 5 GHz again.

Extra tips
What to look for: The Kasa app stuck on connecting, a failed add-device screen, or router troubleshooting options that mention temporarily disabling 5 GHz when a device will not connect.
Before you change anything: Confirm the device is a Kasa EP40 and that you are using the official Kasa app. Note your Wi-Fi name and password before changing router band settings. If others rely on 5 GHz, plan to turn it back on after setup finishes. Never share your Wi-Fi password or account codes with unexpected callers.
