Why won’t my iPad update even with Wi-Fi and free storage?
Answer
Confirm the iPad still qualifies for the iPadOS version you want, restart it, and retry Settings > General > Software Update on a stable Wi-Fi network. If Apple no longer offers updates for that model, the update screen may stay empty or fail permanently.
Before you start: stop right away if…
- Interrupted updates can leave the iPad stuck until connected to a computer.
Follow these steps
Confirm the model and eligibility
Open Settings > General > About and note the model name. Check Apple’s iPadOS compatibility list for that model to see whether any newer update exists.
You should see: You know whether the iPad can still update.
Retry Software Update
Restart the iPad, connect to a reliable Wi-Fi network, plug it in, then open Settings > General > Software Update and try Download and Install again.
You should see: The update downloads, or Apple shows that the iPad is up to date with no newer version.
Free more space and change networks
Delete large unused apps or offload video, then try a different Wi-Fi network. Avoid guest networks that block Apple downloads.
You should see: The download progresses further than before.
Update with a computer if needed
If on-device update keeps failing and the model is still eligible, connect to a Mac or PC and update with Finder or Apple Devices using Apple’s official steps.
You should see: The computer installs the update, or Apple indicates no update is available for the device.

Extra tips
What to look for: Software Update fails or never offers a version on an older iPad that is online with free storage.
Before you change anything: Plug the iPad into power during updates. Back up first if a computer restore may be needed. Note the exact model in Settings > General > About.
